The Truth…. (Read the “lies” post before this post)
So, I made up my mind to never tell a lie again. Now that is a real problem. Who would not want to hear the truth? Just about everyone including, me. The saying, “the truth shall set you free” can truly be true when you find yourself looking for a new job. You might want to be satisfied with your current job, it could be as far as you get with a company.
I worked for a company that put out a statement of how we would interact with other employees in the company and with our customers. The first statement was, “We tell the Truth”. There it was, what I always tried to do, in that statement. Sages in the past had augured about what the truth is for centuries. Now, here it was, simply we tell the truth. Since that first statement the company issued a new statement of mission. This truth statement is gone; it has been buried in this new statement. Now, it has been transformed to a statement about honesty. I still have the original on my office wall.
Truth, be careful, is the most subjective a person can be. The truth can be a blunt blow to a fellow employee; to an employee you supervise, to you, and most assuredly, to your bosses. Be careful, the truth may only be your truth. Make sure you have looked at all sides of the truth. Be patient. Investigate. Maybe as was stated in a movie by Jack Nicholson, “you can’t handle the truth”. Make sure you can handle the truth. It takes courage to stand out and be truthful. Most people are comfortable with the way things are. The truth may mean change that can be uncomfortable. Make sure you want to upset the status quo. This means that each truth has a value. Unless this value is high, this cost may not be worth it to you.
The truth has an impact on me in my journey in supervision. The truth is a struggle with me. The truth may not set you free; but, I know your heart will be stronger for having been truthful with yourself and others.
